Derick grew up in North Carolina and moved to Philadelphia in 1992. He has been a pastor at Bethel Chapel Church in inner-city Philadelphia for almost 20 years. Derick and his wife Sarah have four daughters. He enjoys cooking, history, and the perpetual disappointment of being a Philadelphia sports fan.
